Helpful Info

Girls should wear their vests at all Girl Scout events/meetings.
What to Buy
Uniform: Junior vest or sash (a vest holds more patches)<Note that she will wear this same vest in 4th and 5th grade.>, American flag patch, Council I.D. set, troop numbers 4816, WAGGS pin, GS pin (traditional or contemporary) and the (optional) insignia tab.

We will officially "in-vest" at their Investiture Ceremony. Place the insignia as shown in the picture above. Many patches now come in an iron on form, which is fine for temporary attachment. I know from experience that the bond will eventually lose it's holding power and those patches she worked so hard for will begin falling off. I highly suggest sewing everything on. As a side note, I will do your Girl Scout sewing for you in exchange for a small monetary donation to our troop.

Books:  Junior Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting book (GG2GS) and Get Moving! Journey book.

Girl Scouts of the USA just did a major overhaul on their books. I have the "old" books and the new book. I also have links to an on-line version of the "old" book- which means that as long as the shop still has the patches, we can work on nearly 100 different patches. Of course we won't be doing that, but it's nice to have options. If you would like a copy of the old badge book, the Rockwall Half Price Books currently has several. If you have questions, feel free to call me.

We will be selecting our troop badge work from both books based on girl feed-back and what the shop has available. Girls are welcome to pursue badges on their own time as well, though I suggest she tell me about it first. This will prevent her from working on badges that are discontinued, or from earning something the troop plans to do together. The Journey book will be used as we work on our Bronze Award requirements.

You can choose to buy things separately, as needed. I have all of the books and we can share at meetings until everyone has their own. There are also links out there on the internet to on-line versions of patch requirements.

Or you can purchase a Starter Kit with all the above items included. You can order on line from National, or go in person to one of the 6 area GS shops. Go here for a list of Dallas area GS shops. Sometimes the starter kits come with 2 choices of a Journey book. If that is the case, select Get Moving and as the 1st one and let her choose whichever one she likes best as the 2nd one. Journey books are great for Summer activity books, or long car trips- she'll be keeping busy,  learning and earning patches all at the same time.

The Girl Scout Law
I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.

The Girl Scout Promise

On my honor, I will try:
To serve God* and my country,
To help people at all times, and
To live by the Girl Scout Law.

* The word "God" can be interpreted in a number of ways, depending on one's spiritual beliefs. When reciting the Girl Scout Promise, it is okay to replace the word "God" with whatever word your spiritual beliefs dictate.

Girl Scout Week
Girl Scout Week is celebrated every March, starting with Girl Scout Sunday, ending with Girl Scout Sabbath on Saturday, and always includes the Girl Scout Birthday, March 12. Review  the suggested Badges for activities appropriate for the day's theme. Listed books include the Girls's Guide to Girl Scouting, the old Junior Badge Book, and the various Journey Books.

Girl Scout Week 2012 and suggested Badge Activities:
Sun 3/11 Girl Scout Sunday
GS Sunday and GS Sabbath give girls an opportunity to attend their place of worship and be recognized as a Girl Scout. A “fun patch” is available at the GS Store for participating in GS Sunday or GS Sabbath. You can ask your church about Religious Awards they may offer, or ask the cashier at the GS store. Ask the Youth Director at your church (in advance) if they do anything special for GS Sunday or GS Sabbath- girls may perform a service, such as greeting, ushering, or doing a flag ceremony. These days can also be a time when girls explore the faiths of others.

SWAPs!

What are swaps? Swaps are the Girl Scout tradition of exchanging keepsakes at camping trips, events, and just about anywhere Girl Scouts gather together. SWAPs stands for "Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere" or "Shared With A Pal" or even "Sharing With A Purpose." Swaps are handmade pins, often proudly displayed on hats. They can also be hung from lanyards, key chains, back packs, or stored in a collector box.

Investiture and Rededication Ceremonies

What is an Investiture Ceremony? It is the ceremony used to officially welcome a new girl or adult into Girl Scouting.

What is a Rededication Ceremony? This is the ceremony done by returning members to reaffirm their commitment to Girl Scouts.

This ceremony is held at the beginning of each Scouting year, typically in the fall. The Girls will light the traditional candles, recite the Girl Scout Promise, commit to investing themselves to the Troop, and be officially "vested" with their uniforms. It is very important for all members of our Troop to attend. Family and friends are also invited to support our Girls in their commitment to themselves, their Troop, and the Girl Scouting Movement.

What to bring:
  • Uniform (all insignia properly attached.) Please write your daughter's name on the tag. Give the vests to me upon arrival. I will use them in the ceremony. You do not need to bring your Girl Scout Books.
  • Food/Beverage for the reception.
  • Disposable plates, napkins, cups, cutlery, etc. Please let me know if you are willing to donate these items. Otherwise, the Troop will provide them.
  • Girls should dress nicely- either their official GS uniform, or their "Sunday Best."
  • Bring your camera! Soon there will be a link on our "Photos" tab so we can share Troop pictures with each other.

Juliette Gordon Low, founder of Girl Scouts

Juliette Gordon was born October 31, 1860, in Savannah, Georgia. She was known for her love of animals and great sense of humor. Her family nicknamed her "Daisy."

After her marriage to Englishman William Mackay Low, Daisy split her time between England and America. In 1911, while searching for something meaningful to do with her life, she met Sir Robert Baden-Powell- who had founded the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides. Less than a year later the Girl Scouts of America were well on their way. Daisy, who was almost completely deaf, encouraged girls of all backgrounds and ability levels to realize their full potential and also to help those in need.

Girl Scouts has since become a global organization, helping girls everywhere to become women of Courage, Confidence, and Character.

You can read more about her here. Then take this fun quiz!
